This is a pretty interesting patent from Teknovus. The idea is that an SFP can be built for CPE devices (like a customer Ethernet switch) that provides an ONU optical interface. That would mean that the ONU wouldn't be required in some cases.
What isn't clear is whether or not there would be enough cases like that to justify building and supporting the component.
